It means that whatever we put into our bodies directly impacts our health, fitness and how we feel.
One of the best ways to do this is by consuming foods with high nutritional value, also known as superfoods.
A superfood is nutritionally dense and superior, and can supercharge your health and overall wellness.
There are several superfoods that are jam-packed with nutritional value such as maca root, spinach, acai berries, kale, almonds, blueberries, avocado, spirulina, sweet potatoes and more.
The potentially amazing benefits these foods add to our bodies are more than just general health and wellness, as they’re known to also prevent disease, and also contain anti-aging benefits.

There’s no set criteria for superfoods, except that they’re nutrient-rich, which brings to the fore whether or not CBD is a superfood in the context of supercharging your health.
Here, we’ll consider some reasons why CBD is a superfood and whether it has what it takes to be classified as such.
What Is CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, which is a chemical in the cannabis sativa plant (marijuana or hemp).
The plant has more than 80 other chemicals called cannabinoids, but the major active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol).
It’s the second most prevalent of marijuana (cannabis) active ingredients, and an essential component of medical marijuana derived from the hemp plant.
That said, it doesn’t in itself cause a “high” or any effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential, according to the World Health Organization.
Legality of CBD
CBD contains tiny amounts of THC though, and is legal to sell in the U.S. after the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill.
However, this doesn’t mean that all its derivatives are legal.
As a new drug still under study, CBD can’t be legally included in dietary supplements, foods, or even in products marketed with therapeutic claims.
However, in “cosmetic” products, CBD can be included only if it contains less than 0.3 percent THC levels.
Strangely though, several products exist on the market labeled as dietary supplements that contain CBD, and don’t accurately report the CBD amounts contained in them.
How CBD Works
CBD is known to have antipsychotic effects, whose exact cause is unclear, but, according to WebMD, it seems to prevent the breakdown of a brain chemical that affects mood, pain and mental function.
This way, it increases its levels in the blood and tends to reduce symptoms of psychosis associated with conditions like schizophrenia, seizure disorder (epilepsy), dystonia, anxiety, pain, Parkinson’s disease and other conditions.
However, there’s no solid scientific evidence to support its use in these cases.
Is CBD A Superfood?
Research into CBD is still ongoing, but there are several studies that point to its many proven benefits in helping people realize optimal health and wellness levels.
This is probably why it’s being considered a superfood, much like cannabis that some people content is a superfood itself.
Raw cannabis contains some chemical compounds that make it one of the healthiest plants.
These include cannabinoid acids like THC and CBD, which according to raw cannabis specialist Dr. William Courtney, have antioxidant and neuroprotective properties.
It also contains a unique blend of macro and micro nutrients like amino acids, ketones, enzymes, proteins, vitamin A, fiber and others that suggest it could be a superfood.
Terpenes is another major constituent of cannabis, which adds to its flavor and aroma.
There are more than 200 terpenes in cannabis known to have health benefits like alleviating pain and inflammation, anti-cancer properties, and stress and anxiety reduction among others.
Before making any conclusions as to whether or not CBD is a superfood, here are 7 reasons why we believe it could be:
1. It can relieve and treat pain
Since 2900 BC, marijuana has been used for treatment of pain. Recently, though, scientists have discovered pain-relieving effects in some of its components, including CBD.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the human body that regulates pain, sleep, appetite and immune system responses produces endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system.
CBD impacts these receptors’ activity and may help reduce chronic pain and inflammation, as it interacts with neurotransmitters.
Several studies have also shown the THC and CBD together are effective in pain treatment for diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
2. It may reduce common skin conditions like acne
Acne is a common skin condition thought to be caused by bacteria, genetics, overproduction of sebum, and underlying inflammation among other factors.
CBD oil may be able to treat acne what with its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce production of sebum.
3. Could reduce depression and anxiety
WHO reports show that depression is the largest single disability contributor, while anxiety ranks sixth on the list.
CBD is known to be effective in keeping stress at bay.
While these are treated with pharmaceutical drugs, some of which can be addictive and lead to substance abuse, CBD shows promise as a natural approach to treating these disorders.
4. Linked to several heart and circulatory system benefits
CBD’s benefits could include ability to lower high blood pressure, and impact the heart and circulatory system too.
A recent study treated nine healthy men with CBD oil and discovered a reduction in resting blood pressure, with a smaller increase in pressure after stress tests.
The anxiety and stress-reducing properties of CBD could be the reason for this, besides its powerful antioxidant properties that help with reduction of inflammation and cell death associated with heart disease.
5. Other potential health benefits
CBD is still under study, but it’s also suggested that it may help with substance abuse, diabetes, certain types of cancers, and anti-tumor effects.
More studies are still needed, but it could help reduce psychotic symptoms, dependence on morphine and heroin-seeking behavior, and reduce the incidence of diabetes and inflammation.
Is CBD a Superfood?
Well, with all these potential health and wellness benefits, it could well be considered a superfood as it works in harmony with our bodily systems to provide better physical and psychological health.
With the countless therapeutic benefits of CBD, it’s only a matter of time before it’s officially listed as a superfood.
Research is still in its infancy stages, so there’s more to be done before it’s confirmed, but so far, everything looks promising.
