My Favorite Sort-of-Celebrity-Mom

Kourtney Kardashian.

Yes, I keep up with the Kardashians, The Real Housewives, America’s Next Top Model and the Basketball Wives too. Stevie Wonder and I both saw what was happening to Jon and Kate and their eight. I’m sorry to say, it was inevitable.

When I think of celebrity moms, I’m not thinking Christina Aguilera or Jessica Alba. They’ve got the camera thing down. I’m thinking of the moms who got picked for a show and aren’t as polished. They aren’t thinking about what might end up People magazine, camera angles and their image. With the reality show moms, that happens by the end of the second season and definitely by the third. By then, we’ve seen some real stuff go down.

So with my sort-of-celebrity moms, I’ve shared moments with Jenna from the Real Housewives of Orange County, cheering her oldest son at his baseball game and trucking her daughter off to college. I felt for Laurie from the same show as she gave her son ‘tough love’ while he struggled with an addiction. Laurie was a single mom like me, and did it all and in true Orange County fashion, looking fabulous while doing it.

My favorite mom though, wasn’t a mom when the show started. I’d written Kourtney Kardashian off as a party girl. Her clubbing and brattiness annoyed me. And then she got pregnant. I expected the Kardashian drama around the birth of her baby and there was none. The birth of her son Mason was a beautiful moment that I felt lucky to be a part of. I mean this was a moment reality TV was made for. Kourtney’s water broke and no one ran around, boiled water or did any of the cliched things we usually see on television or that I expected of the Kardashians. Kourtney took a shower and put on make up for her trip to the hospital. During the birth, with her sisters surrounding her, Kourtney didn’t scream or cry. She pushed her baby into the light and caught him in her hands. Someone pass a tissue! She changed in those moments for me. That moment was so honest and real, and the reason why Kourtney Kardashian is my favorite celebrity mom.
