Mama’s Monday Favorite: Power of Fruit – Frozen Fruit Bars

A few cases of Power of Fruit™ Frozen Fruit Bars just arrived at our doorstep, and I must say, they are delicious. Our favorite flavor is CherryBerry. The CherryBerry bars taste satisfyingly sweet without the sugary aftertaste. These mighty little treats are extremely low in calories. Each frozen fruit bar contains between 25 and 35 calories. They make a perfect afternoon snack for a cranky toddler or a nice dessert for the health conscious. The bars have no preservatives, corn syrup, or additives and one bar equals ½ a daily fruit serving.

Mama’s Monday Favorite: Collective Wellbeing Oatmeal Raspberry cleanser

collective wellbeing

The secret is out. Mama has acne. My acne isn’t too bad, but enough for me to experience a tinge of excitement when a few weeks go by without getting a pimple.

After trying every skin product on the market, I finally found Collective Wellbeing’s line of products. Collective Wellbeing works wonders. I use their Oatmeal/Raspberry Corrective Cleanser and the Honey Buff exfoliator. I use the Oatmeal/Raspberry cleanser in the morning and the Honey Buff exfoliator in the evening just before I go to bed.

These products are amazing. I love the Oatmeal/Raspberry because oats have naturally occurring compounds that soothe irritated skin. Irritated skin is one of the culprits of pimple breakouts. It also smells good too. Sometimes, after washing my face, I leave the wet towel on my face and breath in the scent left behind by the Oatmeal and raspberries.

Another reason why I like Collective Wellbeing products is because they are not tested on animals. Collective Wellbeing “will never test its products, formulations or ingredients on animals. Nor will we contract any other agency to do so.”

Mama’s Monday Favorite: Eel River Organic and Grass fed Beef

I love meat, especially when it is organic and grass fed.

After a long week working, I love to indulge in a nice juicy steak. But after watching Food, Inc. several months ago, I was faced with a decision, either switch to organic, grass fed beef or stop eating meat. Since not eating meat is what I consider a miserable option, I did the next best thing. Switch to organic, grass fed beef.

After recovering from sticker shock of the price (remember my $80 Thanksgiving turkey?), I decided to give it a go. I noticed that the color of Eel River Organic Beef is much more red and the ‘redness’ is not caused by spraying the meat with a red dye. (Spraying meat with a red dye is a common used practice that most butchers engage in). Organic and grass fed beef has less fat than their feed lot counterparts. This is an added bonus because it will decrease the time I need to spend worrying about the size of my waistline.

I really liked the taste of the meat. Organic beef tastes more fresh and was more tender. I can definitely tell the difference between organic and non-organic beef.

Nutritionally speaking, organic and Grass fed Beef has two to four times more omega-3 fatty acids than meat from grain-fed animals. Organic and grass fed beef also contains from three to five times more CLA than products from animals fed conventional diets.

Still not convinced that you should try organic and grass fed beef? Maybe the ‘fat’ statistics will seal the deal.

  • Meat from grass-fed cattle is lower in total fat than feedlot-raised animals.
  • Research shows that lean beef actually lowers your “bad” LDL cholesterol levels.
  • Typical annual consumption of beef per person is 66.5 pounds.
  • Switching to lean grass-fed beef will save you 17,733 calories a year. If all Americans switched to grass-fed meat, our national epidemic of obesity might diminish.

Mama’s Monday Favorite: Vanilla Oatmeal Soap

vanillaOatmeal

I’m always looking for new products to try out. This week, I tried One With Nature’s Vanilla Oatmeal Soap. I tried it out because I wanted to find a soap that is not tested on animals.

One With Nature’s Vanilla Oatmeal Soap was a pure delight. It’s smell is deliciously tantalizing. The soap left my skin feeling soft and smooth without leaving a sticky residue. Vanilla Oatmeal Soap is a great exfoliant sensitive skin.

Ingredients:

Saponified Palm and Palm Kernel Oils, Vegetable Glycerin, Natural Fragrance, Oatmeal, Aloe, Shea Butter, Dead Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Salt, Vitamin E, and Plant and Mineral Pigments

Next time, I am going to be a little more daring and try the Coconut Milk Glycerin Soap!

Mama’s Monday Favorite: Health Valley Organic Garden Herb Crackers

cracker

Whenever I think about crackers, I think of Kindergarten classrooms with little plates of crackers and little cups of grape juice. I’m not much of a cracker fan, but Health Valley’s Organic Garden Herb Multigrain Crackers caught my eye.

It wasn’t quite love at first sight, but it was definitely love at first bite. A few weeks ago, I realized I needed to add more fiber to my diet. I love my fruits and veggies, but I needed to up the ante and add some multi-grains to my afternoon snack. I went to my favorite store, Whole Foods Market and headed straight to the Cracker aisle. I must have looked like a damsel in distress because one of Whole Food’s workers approached me and asked if I needed any help. I told him that I was looking for a healthful cracker that also tasted good.

There were several types of healthy crackers to choose from, but none of them looked tasty enough. My Whole Foods’ helper (Kevin) understood my dilemma and suggested that I choose a box that looked ‘tastier than the rest’. I chose Health Valley’s Organic Garden Herb Multigrain Cracker. Kevin opened the box, handed it to me and told me to try one. I was a little surprised (can we really eat food without paying for it?) I reached in and grabbed a cracker. With a little hesitance, I tasted it. The cracker tasted a lot better than I expected. I happily grabbed a few boxes, loaded them into my cart and thanked Kevin for helping me find a healthy, yet tasty cracker.

Mama’s Monday Favorite: Cascadian Farm Organic Honey Nut O’s

hunny nut os

A few weeks ago, my daily supply of fiber consisted of 3 scoops of organic oatmeal, a few scoops of organic granola, an organic apple, a serving of steamed organic broccoli, and a few navel oranges from the tree in my backyard. I had assessed the situation and determined that I needed to add more fiber to my diet. My biggest question was, “What type of fiber did I want to eat, and could I find a tasty, organic version of it?” I headed to my trusty Whole Foods Market to see what I could find.

My first stop in the store was the cereal aisle. I haven’t eaten cold cereal in a few years, but I know eating cereal is an easy way to increase my fiber intake. The cereal aisle in Whole Foods Market is not an ordinary cereal aisle. I couldn’t find any of the cereals that I ate when I was a child, and there were no ‘surprise toys’ or mystery packages neatly hidden inside the cereal box to tempt me. After spending nearly 10 minutes surveying my options, I choose Cascadian Farm Organic Honey Nut O’s.

And boy what a great decision that was. The Honey Nut O’s was a tasty blend of honey and almonds. The box contained 10.4 ounces of cereal. The box didn’t last past day 5. The taste of the Honey Nut O’s was pleasantly sweet but the sugar didn’t leave a sticky residue on my teeth like a box of sugary, sweet cereal with sticky marshmallows.

I didn’t miss receiving a free toy either.

Mama’s Monday Favorite: O.N.E. Natural Drinks

onecoconut

When O.N.E. Natural Drinks sent me a few cases of drinks to try out their product, my mouth watered with anticipation. As a self-proclaimed Whole Foods Market junkie, I had tried their “Amazon Acai” flavor but had not yet tried the “Cashew Fruit”, “Water”, “Coffee Fruit” and “Coconut Water” varieties.

The first new flavor I tried was the Cashew Fruit. The first thing I noticed after opening the seal was the yummy fruity smell. The fruit smell was deliciously intoxicating.

So what exactly is Cashew Fruit? Cashew Fruit is the “fruit” surrounding the cashew nut. And let me tell you, it is a tasty. The taste of the Cashew Fruit was very simple and refreshing with a hint of sweetness. After drinking the first one, I found myself reaching for another one.

The Cashew Fruit drink would be a nice addition to picnic foods, or a perfect replacement for sugar-laden Capri-sun type drinks.
