Helping premature babies and NICU parents one stitch at a time

Having a premature baby born more than 4 weeks early is serious. In the United States, 1 out of every 9 infants is born prematurely. Preterm deliveries often cause intense feelings of regret and sadness for the mother. Afraid and unsure of the future, mothers often become depressed and isolate themselves from family and friends.

The Precious Preemie Project is here to help. We hand-knit hats and blankets for premature babies. Our hats are ‘warm hugs’ for babies when they need it most. We also want parents to know that they are not alone. During a time when they may feel like no one else cares, we are here to show them that we care.

Saving premature babies one stitch at a time

What would you do if your baby weighed less than 4 pounds?
How would you clothe a baby too small for newborn sized clothing?
What if doll clothing was the only type of clothes that would fit your baby?

In a room where everything is too big; the hospital bed, gowns, beds, blankets, and baby bottles. Bite-sized hats made specifically for premature babies offer hope and warmth to the families who love and care for them.

Key facts

  • Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), and this number is rising.
  • Preterm birth complications are the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age, responsible for nearly 1 million deaths in 2013.
  • Three-quarters of them could be saved with current, cost-effective interventions.
  • Across 184 countries, the rate of preterm birth ranges from 5% to 18% of babies born.

When saying thank you is not enough!

We love our volunteers and supporters, but sometimes saying, “Thank You” simply doesn’t convey what we really mean. So to show our appreciation, we created this video.

Saving premature babies one knot at a time

This past weekend, our hands have been busy knitting to express what our hearts feel.

Because it is important for Preemie Parents with babies in the NICU to stay strong and give their little ones a stress free environment with lots of love and care, we are sending an extra large box of hats to the Connecticut region.

Although our NICU babies might not be directly impacted with the tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary, there is an overwhelming heaviness of sadness everywhere and we are going to do everything we can to protect premature babies and hope that their young bodies continue to grow stronger.

If you have extra time, please consider sending a few hats our way.

Heroes Wanted! Let’s help these babies

If you know someone who is pregnant and is on drugs, please tell them to watch this video.

Some premature babies are born to mothers who use drugs. We created Precious Preemie Project to provide warmth and hope to all premature babies. If you know how to knit or crochet, please knit with us. Each month, we donate hand-knitted hats to premature babies in the NICU.
