DNA: The government is storing your baby’s DNA

Newborn babies in the United States are routinely screened for a panel of genetic diseases including, but not limited to: phenylketonuria (PKU), hypothyroidism, galactosemia and sickle cell disease. Since genetic testing of newborns is mandated by the government, it is often done without the parents’ consent.
In many states, such as Florida babies’ DNA is stored indefinitely.
A health care expert and prominent critic of DNA screening Twila Brase, president of the Citizens’ Council on Health Care writes, “The DNA taken at birth from every citizen is essentially owned by the government, and every citizen becomes a potential subject of government-sponsored genetic research.”
Has Uncle Sam gone to far? Is the government looking for the new and improved HeLa cells?
Tell me what you think.

This may be so the government has more of our personal data to put into the computer chips they place in us. Then in the detainment camps it will be easier to keep track of people when they perform future medical testing or torture or whatever they plan to do with the population. Such a lifting thought!
Whoa. Thats intense. Why do they need our baby’s DNA? Research? HA, as if! Its all just a control system, most of us cant see it, but they have more control over us then you think. This whole baby thing is whack.
It is a nice way of avoiding sex crimes in the future without having to get warrants for blood samples.
And who are “they” exactly? The people that you and I and everyone else elected? Amateur conspiracy theory will not get you too far in life.
it could be just so that if they need an organ transplant in the future and need a replacement organ, they can give them a already grown – genetically identical organ to replace the bad one
It is stupid for the government to test our baby’s dna. They should ask for parental consent. we should charge them with stealing. That is private property. Once I have a child I am not going to let them search my baBYS DNA.
I personally disagree with the government storing this information. It is a violation of (yet again) privacy. I believe most people are unaware that this is going on or more people would speak out. We should all be more informed… and cautious…
This is no big deal for me. Why does it actually matter? This will make crime investigations so much easier. I bet they have a million unsolved cases because of unidentified DNA samples. If they do this with every baby for the next 100 years then the crime rate is guaranteed to go down drastically. Good Day!
Robal has a great idea however I doubt any crime lab will ever see the dna samples taken from infants but “c’mon people w the conspiracy theory” grow up there’s no secret society that’s gonna microchip u n lock u away forever at least not n this lifetime there using it to find out how genetics effect diseases n how to prevent them so it may benefit ur great grandchildren now if u wanna protect ur privacy and risk that one of ur future relatives may rely on what scientists learn from this I think that’s very selfish by the way I have 2 small kids and I would not mind sharing their dna to possibly save a life
Ashly is correct. In fact, just recently, a crime lab requested information from the DNA samples. It was refused. For the best information I’ve found yet on this PKU test, check out: http://www.cchconline.org/CCHCpkunbsReport092408.pdf
