No more bake sales in New York City Schools
According to New York City’s latest regulations, there will be no more bake sales in NYC schools. That’s right folks. No cupcakes, no brownies, no sugar cookies, no rice krispy treats, no chocolate cake, no carrot cake, and definitely not a double fudge muffin.
In a response to the high rate of obesity in New York City public schools, the Education Department has banned most bake sales. About 40 percent of the city’s elementary and middle school students are overweight or obese, according to the Education Department. As a part of a new wellness program, there are also limits what can be sold in vending machines and student-run stores.
Schools in California have also banned bake sales or put a limit on the sugar and fat content of the goodies.
I think this is a step in the right direction, but the nutritional value of school lunches should also be considered.
