The Great Health Care Debate: Yay or Nay?

question markMama usually abstains from political discussions. But given the great changes that are upon us and the vast amount of people that the proposed Health Care legislation will affect, I thought I’d dip my little toes into the water…

So what do I think about the proposed Health Care legislation?

I’m really not sure what to think. Like many of you, I have many unanswered questions and I am very concerned. I’ve attended a few town hall discussions, I’ve read newspaper articles, I watch televised speeches, I listen to talk radio (left, right, and center political discussions) and I still don’t know what to think.

I talked with a few friends last week about the legislation. One of the older gals in the group has a family history of colon cancer and is afraid that if the legislation is approved, she won’t be able to get a yearly colonoscopy. Hum..I thought. Under any legislation…old or new, I’d hope that a person (young or old) will be able to receive annual tests for conditions they are at risk for.

Someone else in the group said, “But you smoke cigarettes, I don’t want to be forced to pay for treatment of YOUR smoking related illnesses”.

Then someone else said, “And I don’t want to pay for your afflictions caused by over-eating“. (Given the current overweight and obesity rates in the U.S., we’d ALL have to pay for afflictions caused by over-eating).

Another person said, “When I moved to back to the U.S. with my wife and kids, we couldn’t get private health insurance for my son because he has asthma. When we lived in Japan, health insurance for my son was free.”

I sat there listening…wondering if we were all missing the point.

Who said we were going to pay for other people’s health services? Has an elected official talked about this?

Will we be forced to pay for other folks’ health afflictions, or will the Government Health Care plan be a program where people who put money into the ‘pot’ will be able to take services from the ‘pot’?

What do you think? Share your thoughts and concerns with me.

  1. the problem is HR3200 does not give any specifics so no one really knows what will be in end result. It does state that a group of people will decide the details up to 12 months after the bill has been passed.

So without any details I would have to say NO.

  2. We absolutely need a nationwide health care plan. All other civilized and industrialized countries have it…

We should all have access to health care. Think about it, do you want to be exposed to God knows what because Joe Blow is too poor to have health insurance? As we have seen with the rapid transmission of Swine Flu, when one person get sick we are all at risk.

  3. The stock-market, politicians, drug companies, the companies that process our foods, the huge hospital companies, and yes doctors, not to mention big government, have many reasons to stand in the way of free health care , mostly $GREED$ and $BIG$MONEY$ trillions of dollars. These people can afford to get their thoughts known, on matters that concern us all. This doesn’t mean their thinking in our “WE THE PEOPLE” best interest

Anyone naïve enough to believe that politicians are not in bed with the bad guys need to open their eyes, billions; if not trillions of dollars are missing. Money being watched over by so called independent agencies our government hired. Our government points its greedy fingers at all of us for loans that could not be approved by the banking industry for people to buy homes, without government complicity.

We the people, the ones that work to have a little something, that pay their bills, as well as the unearned wages of a immoral, corrupt, blind rampaging near do wells, better known as the larger part of our government. We the people should remind the politicians they are elected to do what is in the people’s best interest, Health Care, is more important than knowing where we are from a GIS chip in our phone, our phone conversations, our hobbies, what we watch, or what we do in our bedrooms.

We the people need to rope in “the anything we say is right” type of government we’ve unfortunately grown accustom too. Its time to put a stop to the selfishness, aloof, wastefulness that we see every day from our politicians, money sent on useless go nowhere ventures in the name “if the truth were known” money donated to war chest by big business. These chests ought to be called bribe boxes. IT’S OUR TAX DOLLARS, YES WETHE PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE HEALTHCARE it’s not like were spending anyone else’s money but, our own tax dollars!

If you live in fear of your government, then there is no government…

    Speak out.

  4. It is interesting to be a canadian and hear the stories, fears and rumours about something we have enjoyed for years.

I am in my 80s ans till get good service.

    Good luck.

I would push for Nurse Practioners , doctors dont have the time for health items that are minor and they keep some of them from the money making itms (remember in Canada goverment along with the medical profession set th fee. Goverment has the final answer.

  5. I believe everyone deserves the chance to get healthcare regardless of their income stats or anything else for that matter. After all we have to overcome due to the republicans decision-making we should be on board with the democrats and see how the economy and everything turns out, people need to wake up and stop being so quick to turn down Obama’s ideas, what’s the worst that can happen?Nothing can be that much worse than what we’re going through now!!Age/race, or money should not determine who gets some sort of healtcare. We tried Bushs’ ways and nothing worked at least give Obama a chance!!After all,he is trying to benefit all not just the rich or just the poor!We need to get off negativity and not be scared of change because it may actually be good for us and in our best interests!Having healthcare available to all is only fair cause we all still pay taxes no matter what income we make or don’t make, so better it get spent that way than on personal vacations and needless trips!!!
