Birthdays and Funerals

Why is it that when someone has a funeral, everyone and their second cousin comes to ‘pay their respects’? But, when you have a birthday party, people find excuses not to come?

Maybe it is just me, but I’d much rather people ‘pay their respects’ while I’m alive. Oh, and presents are good too.
